I've had several vacuums throughout my NYC apartment living days, and the best one that I've come accross to date, and would recommend with conviction is the Miele. It is lightweight, yet sturdy, and it has an extremely powerful suction. It is also a canister which I happen to prefer since they have more fleixibility around the home, and offer many different models depending on your needs (some help with allergens, etc). They come in all different colors, and all different price ranges, and are small enough to fit into a closet without taking up too much closet space. I've had mine for almost 2 years now, and I can honestly say that it is in as excellent condition as when it first arrived. You can google Miele vacumm, and get it sent to you via the mail.
