Would love some help on how to deal with loud neighbors.

I don't want to be the guy banging on the walls/floor when i'm trying to get to sleep. I don't want to be the jerk in the elevator either. How do I get it through to my neighbors that we need to dial it down a bit during the weeknights? I'd like to maintain a cordial friendly relationship with them since our building is small.
