Landlord needs me to move out temporarily...
what are my tenant rights? I have been living in a three-family home on the 3rd floor apt for 20 years. The area around the skylight in my livingroom and bathroom leak practically ever year especially when we have massive one day rainstorms or it rains for several days in a row. It literally rains in my apt. Over the years, the landlord has hired different cheap labor to fix the roof in the area where the leaks occurr and it still leaks in those areas. Each time the workers have to come thru my apt and go thru the skylight (the one in the livingroom is now a hatch. no window at all). I, a non-roofing proffesional, can see that the wood underneath the roofing material is rotted from water damage and this issue not having been fix many many years ago. This past October a different roofer "fixed" the roof and last Sunday during the deluge of rain again it was raining in my apt. I called the landlord who is on vacation right now and he told me he will probably have to have me vacate my apt (and take all my belongings) for him to have the roof replaced. He said we'll discuss when he is back from vacation.
So what are my rights? where do I go and who pays for the cost of me moving/storing my stuff and the much more expensive rent I'll probably have to pay while the roof is being fixed?
