Giving Up A Rent Stabilized Apartment
. People are asking how anyone can give up a rent stabilized apartment? Like the guy in this weeks "Hunt" I was in a situation where "cheap" stopped outweighing space, light and overall desirability
Its a highly emotional decision because a RS apartment can provide a level of being "housing rich" not achieved since the Greatest Generation paid off their GI Bill mortgages. But like Grandma's kitchen, my RS apartment hadn't been updated since Eisenhower was President (maybe Nixon, but Nixon and done on the cheap). And while it afforded me an exterior standard of living, one does reach a point in life where home becomes more important than the hottest bar..trust me you do. (its one of those changes that drift slowly into your consciousness, like when you realize you've worn flats 90% of the last year when you used to put on heels for anything more formal than a trip to the bogeda).
And so at the same time your friends who didn't luck into the golden handcuffs of an RS apartment are have already sold their starter homes and moved up, you are making the heart wrenching decision to let go of your post collegiate apartment. Yes, 21st century payment/maintenance (or even rent) requires an adjustment, but so does having to close the drapes if you choose to block sun and actually having electrical outlets in the bathroom.
As for the granite countered kitchen, take out still tastes the same.
