Halloween weekend is upon us, which calls for a look at Salem, Massachusetts. The New England town is infamous for the 1692 Salem witch trials, when hundreds were accused of practicing witchcraft and 19 were eventually hanged.

There are lots of events and festivals this weekend for Halloween, plus many historical sites and museums where you can learn about the town’s dark past. You can visit the Salem Witch Museum; the site of the Salem witch trial hangings, which received a memorial in 2017; and the Witch Dungeon Museum. The Peabody Essex Museum's exhibit on reclaiming the Salem witch trials is on display through March.

If witches are not your thing, there’s The House of the Seven Gables (the setting of the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel), and New England Pirate Museum. For a bite (or drink), you can head to popular local restaurants like Mercy Tavern, Flying Saucer Pizza, and Ledger.

If you want to buy a house here, the current median sales price is $512,500, according to Realtor.com. Right now there aren’t many houses on the market but you do have some options, including Capes and Colonials.
