Small Wonder

A charming studio in one of Brooklyn's most desirable neighborhoods—for under $500K

This $445,000 Brooklyn Heights studio may not be in one of the neighborhood's iconic brownstones, but it's surrounded by them, so getting home, as many Brooklyn Heights longtimers know, will be a lesson in the picturesque. Plus, it comes with the luxuries of a larger building: namely a doorman, live-in super and elevator.  There's even a storage, bike room and a furnished roof deck.

It's also about a two-minute walk to the gorgeous Brooklyn Promenade, a couple of blocks from the part of Montague Street that's filled with restaurants and shops, and less than five minutes from the 2 and 3 trains at Clark Street.

A nice touch: The apartment is midcentury modernist's dream, with original steel casement windows and refinished flooring.

The kitchen could use an overhaul (we're talking cabinets, backsplash, countertops and appliances), but there seems to be plenty of cabinet space, a pantry and even a dishwasher.

And the good news is that the rest of the place doesn't seem to need much work. Already in place: A custom-made Murphy bed, a lifesaver in a small apartment. Note: That when the bed is open, it takes up a good amount of space. Make sure you're up for folding it away every day.

More good news: The apartment is about $20,000 less than the area median
