If you are like us, you are experiencing a twitchy, dregs-of-winter urge to change something up inside your apartment. You might want to start with your appliances, as New York state residents can still get cash rebates of up to $105 for buying new, energy-efficient refrigerators, washing machines and freezers to replace old guzzlers. If you replace your fridge, washing machine, and dishwasher all at once, you can get a $555 rebate. It’s all done on a first-come, first-served basis and ends when the money runs out. As of this moment, there is $108,475 left in the fund--versus $190,960 this morning and $379,400 this weekend--so don't delay.  Here's how it works:

  • Buy an Energy Star appliance to replace an existing one. You must be a New York state resident and the appliance must be installed at a New York state address.
  • To qualify for the maximum rebate, recycle the old appliance and get documentation proving that you did. (You get a somewhat smaller rebate if you don't recycle.)
  • Fill out an application form online. You’ll get an e-mail version to print out. Attach proof of purchase and, if applicable, proof of recycling and mail in the application. Completed applications must be postmarked within 14 days of filing out the online form.
  • Or, call New York’s Great Appliance Swap Out hotline 1-877-NYSMART and fill out a form by phone. Again, you’ll need to mail in proof of purchase, and recycling, to receive your rebate.
