No-Fee Apartment of the Week: StuyTown at half off in Upper Manhattan

For this week's No-Fee Apartment of the Week, we are focusing on affordability on the island of Manhattan. Though a couple of years ago we never would have considered Riverton Square--a large 1940s-era StuyTown-esque complex located in Harlem between 5th Avenue and the FDR, from 135th to 138th Streets--it was taken over in March of this year by the same investor recently appointed special receiver for StuyTown. Now, also like StuyTown, the buildings are being operated by the very reputable Rose Associates.

Unlike StuyTown, however, rents are much lower. This two-bedroom, one-bath unit at 2181 Madison Avenue will only set you back $1,800 per month (in StuyTown two bedrooms begin at $3,584), despite having a newly renovated kitchen and bath. This is an elevator building, and unlike StuyTown, the lobby is attended. Your pets are welcome.

No-Fee Apartment of the Week is writer A. Ready's weekly independent selection of a no-fee rental that she believes reflects good value given current market conditions. It is not an advertisement, nor is it paid for by any company/website mentioned.
